Bike Sizing
The best place to learn about bikes is at the track. Watch the races, talked to the riders, and get as many opinions as you can. What size bikes are being used by riders in your age group? Go to several bike shops and see what they have to offer. The best bike in the world won’t make you a winner. BMX showcases the rider’s talents, the bike is only a small percentage of the picture. Cro-moly and Aluminum frames are most popular because they offer the best strength to weight ratios. There are often used bikes for sale at the larger races by riders. This is often a good way to get started, keep a look out and be patient. Let us know your looking so we can help you out. Don’t forget that even the finest bikes are not worth much if they are not properly maintained.

12 and Under?
Because of the many different age groups attracted to BMX, there are a few different variations in frame sizing. Riders from age 5 to 9 can often be found on bikes with very small frames and they are called MINI’S. The smaller frame and components fitted to the bike fit the smaller riders shorter legs and arms and make the bikes easier to ride than a full size 20inch bike. The smaller bikes also weigh considerably less, which also adds to the performance of the bike for the smaller rider. Slightly larger (about a 1/2 in.) than a Mini is the JUNIOR, and then slightly larger again is the EXPERT. All three of these bikes normally run on 11/8 to 1 3/8 size wheels which are narrow, roll with little resistance, and are lighter than a full size wheel assembly. Sizing varies slightly between mfg's ( just like clothes) so try a few to find out what feels best!

Riders 13 and up?
The most common size BMX frame is called a PRO. This is the size bike sold at most discount stores. Riders 13 and up normally ride this size bike, but that all depends on your own personal size and needs. Pro size bikes are often too large and heavy for the younger riders to get out of the gate and around the track quickly. Taller riders might find the longer frame on the PRO XL gives them more leg room. The important part is to find a bike that fits you properly, with a frame and crank arm lengths that are proper for your height.

Old Man Cruiser?
BMX bikes with 24-inch wheels are called CRUISERS, standard bikes normally have 20" wheels. Most of the older (and often larger) riders race in the Cruiser class. The riders find the slightly larger wheels, frames, and longer wheelbase more stable than the 20inch bikes. Cruisers run in a different class than the 20inch bikes and are most popular for the 20 year and older men's and women's classes.
There is also a smaller framed 24-inch version for younger riders that called a JR. Cruiser. The younger age groups for Cruisers are not very popular at local races and rarely run, and these bikes are generally only used as an extra class to compete in for the better riders at the large State and National series races.
